Mountain Road

We took a knife
carved a smile onto your face
didn’t flinch
when an outpouring of blood
spewed from our skin 
laughing under the delusion 
that we are different

We watched your leaves
wither, and die
as we chopped from the neck
when our own children cried from hunger
we didn’t connect  

The soil we dug
to remove you from your home 
we carelessly piled together
awaiting our own bones

Oh, mountain road
we toil and groan 
salty dreams of convenience
how quickly you return us to where, 
we came from
